MetaDefender Core Customer Snapshot

Leader Communications Incorporated (LCI)

Leader Communications Incorporated (LCI), based in Oklahoma City, provides telecommunications, engineering support, information technology, and management services to its government and commercial customers.

Customer Challenges

Since LCI provides services to many government customers, the company takes IT security especially seriously. LCI was using an email security solution with their Microsoft Exchange Server to block unwanted emails from reaching employee mailboxes, utilizing anti-spam, antiphishing, anti-malware and email content policies. LCI was using a single antivirus solution for email security, but experienced a couple of malware breaches and was looking for a way to increase its defenses against email borne malware. In addition, LCI wanted to boost their protection against zero-day and targeted attacks introduced via email.

OPSWAT’s Solution

While LCI was looking for a way to increase its email malware protection, Steve Gorton, Director of Information Technology at LCI, learned about a new integration with Metascan (now MetaDefender), providing advanced email threat protection. Using Metascan technology, they can now scan all incoming, outgoing and internal email attachments with multiple antivirus engines (between 4 and 40), significantly increasing the malware detection rate as well as improving protection against new threats and threats directed at a specific engine’s vulnerabilities. In addition, to prevent advanced threats that might be missed by anti-malware engines, Metascan can sanitize email attachments by converting them to a different format, and detect and block spoofed file type extensions.

Our email security solution combined with Metascan’s multi-scanning anti-malware technology has greatly improved the malware detection rate as well as our protection against zero-day and targeted attacks via email.

Steve Gorton decided to start a trial of Metascan to try it out. “I downloaded and installed the Metascan 4 engine package,” said Steve Gorton. “The software was easy to install and get up and running. As soon as we started using Metascan, the number of malware detections rose significantly.”

LCI went ahead with Metascan implementation and can now rest assured that their email attachments are thoroughly scanned for threats with multiple antivirus engines, boosting their protection against known and unknown malware circulating via email.
