Event Wrap-Up: FIRST Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico

FIRST Conference 2017 San Juan, Puerto Rico

The 29th annual FIRST Conference was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico during the week of June 11-16. I represented OPSWAT at the event, which is an international gathering of cyber security incident response teams and incident prevention experts.

Largely focused on forensics and incident response, the conference facilitated many conversations about what is lacking from contemporary threat intelligence feeds, many of which offer only IoC (indicators of compromise) data without providing in-depth threat data for context. For organizations that don't want to depend on external threat data to determine whether a file is malicious, our MetaDefender Core on-premises deployments offer data about each threat by using multiple anti-malware engines for multiple scan results and faster detection rates.

Our technology also helps prevent cyber security incidents before they happen with data sanitization (CDR) technology. I had several discussions with other attendees at the conference about how data sanitization strips potentially malicious content from common file types to eliminate the threat of phishing, document-borne malware, and other file-based attacks.

I had a tremendous time at FIRST Conference and immensely enjoyed visiting the great city of San Juan. I was also glad that OPSWAT had the opportunity to be a gold sponsor of the conference.
