Electric Power on the Strip: GridSecCon 2018 Wrap-Up

GridSecCon 2018 brought together over 600 cyber security professionals in the electric industry in sunny Las Vegas, Nevada to discuss the latest security trends, best practices, and lessons learned in securing the electric power industry’s critical infrastructure.

Some of the primary trends and topics of interest at GridSecCon were the convergence of OT (Operational Technology) and IT (Information Technology) to include knowledge, culture, techniques, and policies. There were numerous presentations on how OT and IT teams can benefit by working together. Lots of discussion on the latest NERC CIP revisions, including the recent changes made in NERC CIP 003-7, and heavy coverage on supply chain security issues and cooperation between the public and private sectors in securing the electric power infrastructure.

Conference attendees stopped by our booth to see a demo of our popular MetaDefender Kiosk product that provides advanced threat prevention capabilities. We also showed how we can help protect transient cyber assets and portable media to help meet NERC CIP 003-7 compliance standards. With NERC CIP 003-07, responsible entities now need plans to mitigate the introduction of malicious code to low impact BES (Bulk Electric System) cyber systems from transient cyber assets and removable media. This requirement has already been in place for high and medium impact BES systems; what is new is that it now applies to low impact BES systems.
