Data Privacy Week 2022: Mitigating Threats with Proactive DLP from OPSWAT

Data Privacy Week originated as an extension of Data Protection Day in Europe and is promoted every year through the National Cybersecurity Alliance. The annual international holiday is intended to generate awareness about the importance of privacy, highlight easy ways to protect personal information and remind organizations that respecting privacy is good for business. This year, OPSWAT is encouraging businesses, especially within the critical infrastructure industry, to learn more about how to manage and protect sensitive online data, respect customer data and learn about the responsibility they hold for keeping individuals’ personal information safe from unauthorized access and ensuring fair, relevant and legitimate data collection and processing.

DLP, which stands for "data loss prevention" or "data leakage prevention,” refers to technical solutions and processes employed by organizations to prevent exposing or sharing sensitive data with unauthorized users. Implementing effective DLP is challenging, and data breaches can threaten the existence of organizations suffering leakage or loss of data.

OPSWAT’s Proactive DLP can help businesses keep Personal Identifiable Information (PII) private and mitigate threats by detecting and automatically redacting or blocking sensitive and confidential data in files and emails – including credit card numbers, social security numbers, IPv4 addresses, CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing), or any other private or proprietary information via custom regular expressions – and prevent it from leaving or entering the organization’s system. With the integration of Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Proactive DLP also helps to block phishing documents and flag PII in images and non-searchable PDF files.

According to a Pew Research Center study, 79% of U.S. adults report being concerned about the way their data is being used by companies. As technology evolves and the COVID-19 pandemic continues to influence how consumers interact with businesses online, data collection practices are becoming increasingly unavoidable, making it imperative that companies be open and honest about how they collect, use, store, and share consumers’ personal information and communicate their policies clearly and concisely. Many organizations are held accountable through various compliance and regulatory standards, and OPSWAT’s technology aids compliance with data protection regulations and industry-standard security requirements such as PCI, HIPAA, GPDR, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, FINRA, and more.

Proactive DLP is a key technology in OPSWAT products, including MetaDefender Core, MetaDefender ICAP Server, MetaDefender Email Gateway Security, MetaDefender Kiosk, and MetaDefender Vault. OPSWAT Proactive DLP can help you prevent sensitive and regulated data from leaving or entering your organization’s systems.
